Key tax deadlines to keep on your radar
The dates that matter for individual and small-business filers, and what happens if you miss them.
Deadlines shift by a day or two when they land on a weekend or holiday. These are the ones to plan around.
Individual returns
- Mid-April: federal and most state individual returns are due, along with any balance owed
- Mid-April: first-quarter estimated tax payment is due for the current year
- October: the extended filing deadline, if you filed an extension
An extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay. If you expect to owe, pay what you can by April to limit interest and penalties.
Self-employed and small business
- Quarterly estimated taxes are generally due in April, June, September, and January
- Partnership and S-corporation returns are due about a month before individual returns
- 1099-NEC forms to contractors are due at the end of January
If you got a notice
- IRS and state notices almost always state a response-by date
- Responding on time preserves your options, even if you can't pay in full
- Bring the notice to us as soon as you get it so we have time to respond properly
