What to bring to your tax appointment
A plain checklist of the documents that make your return faster, cheaper, and more accurate.
The single biggest thing that slows a return down is missing paperwork. Gather what applies to you before we start and upload it to your portal in one batch.
Identity
- Photo ID for you (and your spouse, if filing jointly)
- Social Security or ITIN numbers for everyone on the return, including dependents
- Last year's tax return, if we didn't prepare it
- Your bank routing and account number for direct deposit
Income
- W-2s from every employer
- 1099-NEC / 1099-K / 1099-MISC for self-employment or gig work
- 1099-INT, 1099-DIV, 1099-B for interest, dividends, and investment sales
- 1099-G for unemployment or a state refund
- 1099-R and SSA-1099 for retirement and Social Security
- Records of any other income (rental, cash, hobby, crypto)
Adjustments, credits, and deductions
- 1098 for mortgage interest; property tax records
- 1098-T and 1098-E for tuition and student loan interest
- Childcare provider name, address, tax ID, and amount paid
- Health insurance Form 1095-A if you bought coverage through the marketplace
- Charitable donation receipts
- IRA or HSA contribution records
If you're self-employed
- Total income received
- Expense totals by category (supplies, software, phone, travel, etc.)
- Mileage log or total business miles
- Home office square footage, if you use one
- Records of any estimated tax payments you made
Not sure whether something matters? Upload it anyway or ask in a message. It's easier to set aside a document we don't need than to chase one we do.
